CARE Program
C.A.R.E. is the Los Amigos Elementary School Title I program. CARE is an acronym for "Community-Assisted Reading Education". The CARE Program is comprised of two major components: structured mentoring (one-on-one assistance) and individualized lesson plans. CARE services the the most needy 25% of the school's Title I population in Language Arts and Reading. The CARE Program services 75 - 90 students Monday - Thursday, in seven, 35 minute sessions. Students come four days per week.
Individualized Learning
Once student selection is complete, each child is administered a series of diagnostic tests. Test results are entered into the CARE database via specific reading and language arts objectives. The computer matches the child's needs with a variety of educational materials available in the CARE Room and prints out an individualize learning prescription. Student prescriptions are then used to write weekly lesson plans by the CARE/Title I teacher.
Structured Mentoring
In addition to the the CARE teacher, the CARE Program utilizes a Volunteer Coordinator. The Volunteer Coordinator's primary focus is to recruit volunteers/mentors for the CARE Program, classrooms and other areas of the school throughout the year. All volunteers are screened and trained. CARE volunteers become "Mentors" and work one-on-one with the same student. We refer to our mentoring program as structured because every minute of the time is planned out for the mentor and their student. Every CARE student has a folder that contains daily lesson plans. The mentor spends 15-20 minutes reading with the student, 10 minutes on spelling and vocabulary, and 10 minute on the selected reading objective.
Mentors and volunteers have become a regular sight on our campus. They are respected and loved by the students, and welcomed and appreciated by the school staff and administration.
Why CARE?
In addition to being a great reading and language arts program, CARE gets RESULTS! Students in the CARE program make an average of three years reading growth in one year. We attribute such remarkable results to our volunteers who take the time to be "Community Assistants in Reading Education".
How Can You Help?
Los Amigos is always looking for volunteers and mentors. Anyone one can be a mentor regardless of your ability! We invite you to come and visit our programs and school. If you have just 30 minutes a week to give, you can help one child to be successful. Give a gift that money can not buy, make the world a better place, and feel good that you were able and willing to help a child succeed.
