Dear CSD Families,

 

Every parent wants the best for their child, strong academic programs, supportive teachers, and opportunities that help students succeed. One of the most important ways families can help make that happen is by sharing their voice.

 

Each year, our district asks families to complete the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) Survey. This short survey helps school leaders understand what is working well and where improvements are needed. Even more importantly, the results help guide how funding and resources are used to support students.

 

When parents share their feedback, it helps our district make decisions that directly impact classrooms, programs, and student support services.

THE ONTARIO CENTER SCHOOL

Celebrating Our Shared History: The Story of Black History Month
 

At The Ontario Center School, we believe that every student deserves to see themselves reflected in the stories we tell, which is why we are so proud to honor the establishment and legacy of Black History Month. This tradition began in 1926 as "Negro History Week," founded by the historian Carter G. Woodson. Woodson, often called the "Father of Black History," chose the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, seeking to ensure that the vital contributions of Black Americans were no longer overlooked in our national narrative. By 1976, this celebration was officially expanded to the entire month, with President Gerald Ford urging the nation to honor the "too-often neglected accomplishments" of Black Americans. Our school community is deeply enriched by this study, as we explore how Black culture has shaped our music, our scientific advancements, and our very definition of perseverance. From the historical milestones of the Civil Rights Movement to the modern innovations of today’s Black leaders, these stories provide our students with a roadmap for excellence and a deeper appreciation for the American traditions we all share.
 

Teaching our youth about these positive contributions is essential because it allows students to find heroes they can truly identify with, fostering both confidence and empathy. As we look toward the horizon, we recognize that Black history is not just a look back at the past, but a necessary tool for building a brighter future. As the scholar and activist Maya Angelou once suggested, we need to understand our past to help us navigate our future; she famously noted that "history, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again." By acknowledging the profound ways Black Americans have enriched our culture and continue to drive our society forward, we empower our students to become the next generation of thinkers, builders, and dreamers. We remain committed to ensuring these voices are celebrated and woven into the fabric of our learning every day, helping every child realize the greatness that exists within themselves.
